Truby King Park is a 1.9-hectare heritage Wellington City Council garden in Melrose, the former home of Sir Truby and Lady Isabella King (founders of the Plunket Society). The hillside grounds (now part of Wellington Gardens) hold the Kings’ 1920s plantings of pines, roses, rhododendrons and azaleas, brilliant in spring, with picnic spots, parking on Manchester Terrace and a 10-minute climb from Wellington Zoo. The park sits on the Southern Walkway, an easy 10.3km city-to-coast walk.

We have visited Truby Park in 2020, it was a wonderful experience. Loved the history, nature , fresh air. Beautiful flowers, good place to have a walk and chat and enjoy nature and history. This is also a good place for a picnic. Kids can play and have fun. Parking was easy to find.

Great views of Lyall Bay and lovely piece of Wellington history. Nothing nearly as large or elaborate as the botanical gardens but it’s well maintained and cared for. The house is only available for tours via appointments or on a few special days a year. Would be a good place to take kids to watch the planes take off.
