About SlideScout
Kia ora! Here's the story.
Hey, we started this for our own kids and figured we'd share.
SlideScout began as an idea for our family to get out and see more of our city. Every weekend the same question (where are we taking the crew today?) and every weekend the same answer: the same two playgrounds we always go to.
When we went looking, there wasn't a great map of NZ playgrounds with visit notes specifically from parents and kids. So we built one.
What it is
- Just a fun side project for parents and kids. Not a startup, not a product, no roadmap deck.
- 1,392 playgrounds across Aotearoa, mapped and ready to scout.
- Visit notes from parents (facilities, accessibility, shade, parking, the boring-but-useful stuff) and kids (the only rating that actually matters: how fun is it?).
- Each playground is mapped to its local council so you can report broken equipment to the right place. No more guessing whether this one is Hutt City or Wellington.
- We're not selling anyone's data. Ever. See privacy for the details.
Who built it
Built solo by a parent in Wellington who wanted somewhere new to take his kids. No team, no investors, no "we're hiring" page. Just one whānau and a laptop.
About the data
To get this off the ground, the initial review data was seeded from Google Maps (with attribution clearly shown on each Google review). We want your visit logs (parent ratings, kid ratings) to take over over time. Google reviews fade into the background; the crew takes the front seat.
Photos are credited where applicable. Playground locations were stitched together from open council data and LINZ boundaries.
Got a suggestion?
Found a playground we've missed? Spotted a mistake? Got a feature you'd love? Flick an email to [email protected]. Real human on the other end, promise.
Thanks
Big ups to the NZ councils who publish their playground data openly, and to LINZ for the boundary data that lets us route problem reports to the right place. Open data makes hobby projects like this possible. Ngā mihi.
