The kōrero given about Waikirikiri is the area used to be swamp land, and the stream that is running through the back is where Birds, insects, and Māori would wash off the mud after wading through the swamp land. Waikirikiri Park is Gisborne District Council’s headline Outer Kaiti sports park at 8 Dalton Street, hosting rugby, football and touch seasons across multiple fields. A new ‘dream playground’ — chosen through six months of community consultation — is fully accessible with wide pathways, ramps and inclusive play equipment, and sits alongside an upcoming indoor sport and recreation hub forming part of Gisborne’s Kaiti sports masterplan. Parking, toilets and walking paths complete the precinct; the park is open 24/7.

Very muddy boggy place during the rugby season. In dire need of more parking. Otherwise good in the summer.
