Rutherford Park is a Nelson City Council central civic park on Paru Paru Road, sitting on the west bank of the Maitai River beside the Trafalgar Centre. The park hosts open-air markets, the Matariki festival and concerts (Bay Dreams, Salmonella Dub, Tiki Tane), with tennis courts, the iconic ‘Old Lumpy’ skatepark, sculptures, walking trails and grassy lawns. A new Playspace Whakatū destination playground is set to open during the 2026/27 summer; carparking and links to the Maitai walkway are at hand.
