The Margaret Mahy Family Playground (Tākaro ā Poi) sits in central Christchurch on the banks of the Avon River and is described by Christchurch City Council as the largest playground in the Southern Hemisphere. It is laid out as four themed zones (peninsula, forest, wetlands, plains) inspired by the Canterbury landscape, with adventure equipment, water play, a flying fox, and an 8-metre spiral slide. The playground opened in December 2015 and was designed for children of all ages and abilities to play side by side.
