Porritt Park is the Thames-Coromandel District Council destination playground at 406 Queen Street in central Thames, named after Governor-General Sir Arthur Porritt and opened in its current form on 31 May 2024 after a $1.5 million rebuild largely funded by Thames philanthropists Jackie and Chris Reeve. The play space leads with the bespoke Wakatere boat, a climbing tower with a lookout, hamster wheels, talking tunnels, an accessible see-saw and carousel, plus a skate bowl and basketball half-court for older kids. A Changing Places accessible bathroom (only the fifth in New Zealand), new BBQ and picnic areas round out the package. Best treated as a destination Coromandel family stop.
