The Friendly Bay Steampunk Playground is a Waitaki District Council destination playground on Oamaru Harbour next to the historic Victorian Precinct, opened in 2011 and themed entirely around steampunk. Signature equipment includes a penny-farthing swing set, a giant elephant with howdah, a full-sized pirate ship, a fishing boat, a big flying fox, a huge climbing net that drops into a big tunnel slide, parallel bars, an overhead climbing ladder, a hamster wheel and a vaulting horse. Sealed accessible paths wind through the whimsical industrial-style structures of gears, pipes and fantastical machinery, making the whole site wheelchair- and pram-friendly.
