Atawhai Park is a Palmerston North City Council reserve on Atawhai Road in Fitzherbert, perched with a panoramic outlook across the Massey University farmland and up to the Tararua Range. The park combines a wheelchair-accessible playground with slides, swings and shaded seating, plus access to the Turitea Walkway from the same Atawhai Road entry. On-site parking is available. Best treated as a combine-the-play-with-a-bush-walk family stop in southern Palmerston North.

You can reach Atawhai Park the easy way or the hard way. The hard way is to walk all the way up the hill following the Bledisloe to Old West Road walkway, when Atawhai Park appears as a nice resting point halfway your route (and a nice distraction for moaning kids). The easy way is to drive up the hill. Parking is on the street, and may be okay the day you go, but there are too many yellow-line restrictions to be sure. You could also do half the route from here, either north to Old West Road, and back, or South, downhill to Bledisloe Park, and back uphill, or you could take the bus to/from here and go for a short, one-way walk, instead (in which case parking is not a problem, although it could be timing the bus! ).

It’s a really cute park. Slide, swings, bridge, pole, and beautiful views. Just remember that if it has rained then from the walk pathway to the park its hardly 15 steps but they can be wet and muddy. There is no shade or cover. There is one bench for adults to sit. Its a bit hidden. It’s quite cute
