Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park is a 60-hectare Hamilton City Council nature reserve on Brymer Road in Rotokauri, across from Hamilton Zoo, billed as New Zealand’s largest inland restoration project. Since 2003 hundreds of thousands of eco-sourced native trees have been planted to recreate the Hamilton Basin’s original wetlands and bush around Lake Waiwhakareke (Horseshoe Lake). Gentle, well-formed walking trails loop through the planting. Friends of Waiwhakareke run monthly volunteer planting on the last Saturday of each month.
