My partner and I visited Wairaka Centennial Park and had such a wonderful experience. It’s one of the most beautiful and historic places in the area. We went for an evening walk, and I loved every bit of it — especially when the sun was setting. The views were absolutely splendid, peaceful, and relaxing. A perfect spot to enjoy nature and history together. Truly worth a visit! 🌅

Wairaka Centennial Park sits at the heads alongside the Whakatāne River on Muriwai Drive, a recently refurbished destination playground free to the public. Highlights are the Whakaari (White Island)-themed slide, multiple climbing frames, a zero-depth water-play area with cooling fountains and a riverside swimming/diving/jumping spot for older children. Picnic tables, BBQs, shade structures, toilets and a bike/cycle path link round it out.

This is my all time favourite place to go when I come home to Whakatane. At the heads you can swim, have a bbq, play on the park or even go looking for crabs at low tide. Always something to do
