Mataatua Reserve is a waterfront reserve on Muriwai Drive in Whakatāne that extends from Wairaka Centennial Park to the Commercial Wharf, including the Whakatāne boat ramp and Big Game Wharf. The reserve is culturally significant to Ngāti Awa and the Wairaka community, with the Mataatua Waka shelter, Muruwai's Cave and sacred rocks visible in the river; a family playground sits within the open grassed area alongside picnic seating, toilets and parking.

Nice ocean front park has playgrounds, toilets, walking trails, lots of parking and plenty more to see and do. Great for a picnic with heaps for kids to do.

Great view from up here, looking over Whakatane township and it towards whale island, worth the short drive along the gravel road to get there.
