Kowhai Park Family Playground sits along the Whanganui River off Anzac Parade and was built by local Lions Clubs in the 1990s with a unique fairytale theme. Among the standout structures are a giant octopus climber, a pirate ship, a castle, a pumpkin tower, a dinosaur back slide, an Old Woman's Shoe, Humpty Dumpty's wall, Little Miss Muffet's spider, a clock-tower spiral slide and Whale-tail slide, with seasonal water-play fountains in summer. Adjacent are a bike and skate park, the Tot Town miniature railway (weekends/holidays), covered BBQ and picnic shelter, public toilets and ample parking.

Free park in Whanganui where you can do a lot of things. You can bring food and eat out with family. There is a bbq place tgat you can use. Children can enjoy the play grounds. There is a train ride for few dollars. Can rent small manual cart for a dollar to go round and round for quite some time. There is a bicycle and skate park at the end of the park. If you go further there is an area where you can play mini golf and ride a go kart and race with your love ones. Some people do fishing on the side of the park.

Popped in our way through from Hamilton . Great playground, providing much excitement and fun for many children. It's a shame so many people decide to leave so much mess behind. Cleaned up a fair bit of food wrappers and glass while we were there, but was still much more to tidy up. Apart from that, it was a pretty cool place.
