The temperate sub-ground environment houses 50,000+ plants including New Zealand's largest Disa Orchid collection, native ferns, begonias, bulbs and seasonal displays. Entry is free, with guided tours daily and wheelchair/stroller access via the upper Horton Walk mezzanine. Located near the Rogan and Fillis Street entrances and the Tea House.

Since the weather in New Plymouth wasn’t great during our stay, we decided to visit this fernery - and we were really (really!) glad we did. Honestly, we were surprised that something this beautiful is completely free. If you’re in the area you should definitely visit this lovely place!

I was so captivated with the plants displayed. I love how there are different houses for the plants. It is very well curated. There are even chairs and places for picture purposes. I love how you enter the houses, there’s a mini tunnel you go under - it somehow builds an anticipation, the flowers coming into view! Oh there are steps leading to the houses, but they’re short and safe. It is so beautiful to take photos here. It’s cool that you don’t have to pay anything to enter! I definitely recommend!
