Nelson Park is a 38.9-acre Gisborne District Council reserve on Nelson Road in Riverdale, used as a sports ground with full-size fields and walking paths. A fort-themed playground with swings and picnic seating sits alongside the sports area under mature trees, and the park hosts a range of community sports clubs (Whiti Ora Tairāwhiti).

Great place to walk the dog off-leash. We only go there when visiting Gisborne for Xmas, but there is plenty of space to play fetch, the river bank and tree groves for shade and different smells. We usually do two laps including a walk down the path to the bridge by the school (sorry don't know the name). We have seen some stupid dog owners there with uncontrolled dogs zooming around in packs, but this seems to be rare and the place is big enough to avoid them.
