Dunedin Botanic Garden Playground sits in the lower gardens of the Dunedin Botanic Garden and reopened in October 2024 after the biggest overhaul of the play space since 1985. The design, developed with mana whenua via Aukaha and inspired by the legend of Mahuika and Māui, leads with a 5 metre tower with dual tube slides and an accessible stainless steel slide, a large wooden climbing structure with commando nets and an observatory platform reached by a wheelchair-accessible ramp. Trampolines including a recessed wheelchair-friendly trampoline, a carousel and swings round out a wide age-range play set for kids 0 to 12. Inside a free public garden with picnic spots and walking paths, this is a destination stop on any Dunedin family visit.

The Dunedin Botanic Garden Playground is a delightful family-friendly highlight within the beautiful Dunedin Botanic Garden, offering a welcoming space that blends imaginative play with lush natural surrounds. Recently reopened after its most extensive upgrade since the 1980s, this playground now features a range of modern and accessible equipment that appeals to both younger and older children alike. Kids will be drawn to the standout features, including a five-metre tower with dual tube slides and an accessible stainless-steel slide, a large wooden climbing structure with commando nets, and several trampolines — one of which is recessed and wheelchair-friendly. There’s also an accessible roundabout, a series of swings, and balance-challenging stepping features that encourage active play and coordination. Parents and caregivers appreciate the thoughtful design elements too: generous soft-fall surfacing, comfortable seating and picnic areas, and wide open spaces make it easy to supervise little ones and enjoy a relaxed day out. The playground’s design draws inspiration from Māori legends, with artistic elements reflecting local flora and fauna woven through the area, adding cultural richness to the experience. Reviewers consistently praise the space for being safe, inclusive, and fun — though a few suggest small improvements like additional handrails on slides. Set against the backdrop of blooming gardens and peaceful paths, this playground is a gem for families visiting Dunedin — a perfect stop for active kids before exploring the wider gardens or enjoying a picnic nearby.
